But lots of people don't ever get rich enough to be able to get a mortgage, and there are choices you can make even when you have one e.g. we didn't "need" to buy a 4-bed house for 2 of us and a child, but we did - and rent two rooms out because we used to need the money when working part-time and now we're both back to full-time we still don't need the space yet, and I'm used to the money coming in.

I don't think it's just the superrich who think about how much more they could earn - I sometimes wonder about it, with little goals like "doing up the house faster" or "keeping this lifestyle without needing both of us to work" or "donating serious money to charity & politics".
