I think it's not so much that people didn't respect my name (though that definitely provoked a "why did I bother changing then?" feeling), but the gradual awareness that *lots* of people didn't respect people's choice to keep their names (or change their names). And by trying to compromise with tradition, I wasn't helping, I'd given people plausible deniability by saying things like "Tony & Rachel Finch is fine" and people kept going "well then Mr & Mrs Anthony Finch MUST be fine then, and anyway TRADITION".
