I am getting increasingly frustrated with my phone (a Fairphone One), which is about 3.5 years old now and frequently crashing, as well as physically a bit dodgy (because I am clumsy and drop it quite often).  My previous phone was an iPhone 4 which I also had for a bit over 3 years.

I was dithering about the options for a replacement (including going back to Apple rather than sticking with Android), and was thinking of posting a poll, and being systematic about the options.  But then I started reading reviews at Which? and decided a Galaxy A3 would work for me (at the top end of a size I can cope with holding, not horrifically expensive, should be a significant improvement over the current phone, available now) and bought one to be delivered to work tomorrow.

It's possible I am a satisficer rather than an optimiser.

An impatient satisficer.

I'd love to love the Fairphone, but my friends who have one have not been at all positive about its reliability.

I hope the A3 works for you.

[personal profile] 1ngi's just got a refurbished Fairphone Two, solving both the price and availability issue. However, it doesn't feel as sturdy as the One (less metal, more recycled plastic) so we'll have to see how it survives the knocks.

Reason for replacement is that the USB port on the One was becoming dodgy—it would only charge if the cable was propped up at a precise angle and you can guess how reliable data transfer was. And repair was impossible, as there are no longer any spare daughterboards in existence.

I've just been told by Fairphone that lots of people on their community boards are interested in old FP1s for spares if you want to sell it. https://forum.fairphone.com/c/market

I'm thinking of doing this. The referbed FP2 was from the Phone Coop - but was still £360+ so price still issue I imagine.

Enjoy your new phone!

No point paying for more phone than you need, really.

For some things, satisfaction is very important, as perfection creates unacceptable delays.

It is a lovely concept. (We learned it fairly early on in library studies, because people aren't usually willing to wait for the perfect solution when a good enough is available.)
